This is the same framed artwork exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art in during Disability Pride Month as part of the museum’s historic inaugural exhibition devoted entirely to work by disabled women artists. The work remained on view for the full month of July.
Communication differences between neurotypical and neurodivergent cultures can create unseen barriers that are often misunderstood through a deficit-based lens. Grounded in Dr. Catherine Crompton’s Double Empathy Problem, Not Even If You Wanted To visualizes the seemingly insurmountable communication divides experienced by late-diagnosed women like the artist. The vintage telephone featured was historically designed without a dial to prevent outgoing calls and was discovered in a Ukrainian vintage shop.
Not Even If You Wanted To is part of The Latest, an ongoing photographic and mixed-media project exploring my experience as a late-diagnosed autistic woman through constructed imagery, color, ritual, personal narrative, and neurodivergent ways of organizing and making meaning of the world.
